Overview

The supply temporary electrical plant and equipment project for the Eastern Tunnelling Project in Sydney involved providing a reliable and efficient temporary electrical infrastructure to support tunneling operations and other construction activities. This was a hire job, where the client hired our assets to complete the necessary works. The scope of work included the design, supply, delivery, handling, installation, testing, and commissioning of electrical infrastructure across two different sites. The project included the development of site surface and underground substations, as well as the construction of a HV switchyard.

Objectives

  • Provide a reliable temporary electrical network to support tunneling operations and construction activities.
  • Ensure safe and efficient power distribution across the two project sites.
  • Conduct comprehensive engineering studies to optimize system performance and mitigate risks.

Scope of works

  • Design, supply, delivery, handling, installation, testing, and commissioning of electrical infrastructure across two sites.
  • Development of Site Surface and Underground Substations to accommodate power requirements for construction and tunneling operations.
  • HV Switchyard installation to manage high-voltage power distribution.
  • Full installation and commissioning of systems at both project sites to ensure operational efficiency and safety.

Supplied Items

  • High Voltage Metering Panels for accurate power distribution monitoring.
  • Neutral Earthing Resistors to ensure safe earthing and protect the electrical network.
  • Ring Main Units to enhance network flexibility and reliability.
  • 1.5MVA 11kV/400V Substations for stable power supply and efficient voltage transformation.
  • Gate End Boxes for safe and controlled access to the electrical systems.
  • Annual Injection Testing for all equipment to ensure operational integrity.
  • Harmonic Assessments conducted on the system to ensure optimal power quality.
  • Full commissioning of all systems across both sites to meet technical standards and ensure system readiness.

Key Deliverables

  • 11kV/433V Containerized Substations: Installed at both sites to provide stable high-voltage power for temporary operations.
  • 1kV/433V Containerized Substations: Installed to provide flexible and reliable low-voltage solutions across both sites.
  • Low Voltage Main Switchboards: Ensured consistent power control and safety at both sites.
  • High Voltage Ring Main Units: Installed at the HV switchyard to improve power reliability and facilitate flexibility in the power network.
  • 11kV Metering Panels: Installed for accurate monitoring and management of temporary power distribution at both sites.
  • Engineering Studies: Comprehensive protection studies, power quality analysis, fault level assessments, arc flash evaluations, and load flow analysis were conducted to ensure a safe and efficient electrical system.

Outcome

The temporary electrical infrastructure was successfully supplied, hired, and installed across both project sites, ensuring a stable and uninterrupted power supply for the construction operations. The project was delivered on time, meeting all technical and safety standards, and supporting the efficient operation of tunneling activities. The systems provided are designed to accommodate increasing power demands as the project continues.
